Okay, so this post is a little late and yes the title is stolen from the book Everything is Illuminated (which is a great book and you should probably read it) but it is appropriate so trust me…

New Year’s Eve marks the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. A time of endless possibilities and new starts. I have always found it a little odd that one midnight a year signifies so much to so many people.

As I was celebrating the new year with friends, I was struck by the emphasis that we place on this weird day where our year starts anew. My mom sent me a text message that said something along the lines of being so excited to spend another year with her wonderful children. It dawned on me that this is not entirely true and that my mom should probably be saying this on our birthdays, where our time spent together actually begins again.

Thinking about spending the new year with my boyfriend I was struck by this same thing. “Wait a minute,” I said. “Our year together starts on July 5th, nbot today.”

I don’t know why this strikes me but beginnings come often, and maybe we should celebrate these a little more often than once a year. This just seems so beautiful and refreshing to me.

“The end of the world often comes,” but so do beginnings. So here’s to today, tomorrow and everyday there after, everyday a new beginning.
